Júzcar is about an hours drive from Villa Los Paraisos, part of the region of Andalucia near Malaga and set amidst the ‘pueblos blancos’ (white towns) of Spain, so popular with tourists to this region. It is situated in the east of the province in the Valle del Genal. It is approximately 22 kilometres from beautiful Ronda and 113 from the provincial capital of Malaga.
In spring 2011, buildings in the town (including the church and gravestones) were painted smurf-blue by Sony Pictures to celebrate the premiere of the Smurfs movie. 4,000 litres of paint were used. In December 2011, Sony offered to repaint the town white. Citizens voted to leave the buildings painted blue, as an estimated 80,000 tourists visited in the six months following the repainting as opposed to 300 in previous years!
It is wonderful that there is now a Smurf 2 movie which will serve to keep Juzcar in the limelight for the forseeable future. If you are looking for a quirky, interesting place that the children will love too it’s a good choice. There is so much to see here in this region that I am spoiled for choice to blog!
